Head volleyball coach Will Condon begins his second season at the helm of the Armstrong Atlantic State program after an outstanding debut in which he took the Pirates to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, becoming the first Peach Belt program to earn a volleyball region champinoship.
The Pirates went 28-7, capturing the Peach Belt regular season and tournament titles to earn a berth in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2004. The Pirates defeated Lander, Lincoln Memorial and Catawba to capture the Southeast Region title and advance to the NCAA DII Elite Eight in Minnesota.
Condon's first Pirate squad featured the program's first AVCA All-American in setter Hannah Segebart; his second straight PBC Player of the Year honoree in Rindy Vidovich and third straight PBC Tournament MVP in Torrie Bevolo.
Condon joined the Pirates from fellow Peach Belt Conference school USC Aiken, where he served as the Pacers’ head volleyball coach for the past eight seasons, compiling a 161-100 record as the winningest coach in that school’s history.
The Peach Belt Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2006, the Pacers under Condon collected back-to-back Peach Belt regular season and tournament titles in 2006 and 2007. The titles were the first for the Pacer program since 1995.
USC Aiken also made its first-ever appearances in the NCAA Championships in both seasons, advancing to the NCAA South Regional.
Condon became USC Aiken’s ninth head coach in 2000 and immediately enjoyed success as he took a squad that had finished 11-18 in the previous season and directed them to a 24-10 overall record and a 9-5 conference mark, finishing third in the PBC.
In 2001, USC Aiken was again in the upper half of the conferenc
standings with a 19-12 overall record (7-7 PBC), placing the team
fourth.
After a 13-21 mark in 2003, the Lady Pacers posted one of the
biggest turnarounds in conference history with a 21-13 record in
2004. Finishing 8-6 in the PBC, USC Aiken was one game back of
third place.
The 2004 season saw Condon and the Pacers put up another 20-win season with a 21-13 record and an 8-6 mark in the league, setting the stage for a four-year run in which USC Aiken would win 35 of 48 conference matches, culminating in the undefeated 10-0 mark the Pacers compiled in 2007, the first undefeated league mark in the PBC - and only the third league school ever to compile an unbeaten volleyball league record.
While at USC Aiken, Condon coached one ESPN: The Magazine/CoSIDA All-American and PBC Player of the Year (Mandy Gerolstein), one PBC Freshman of the Year (Amy Long), 13 All-PBC performers and 20 PBC Player of the Week honorees.
Four times Condon directed the Pacers to 20-win seasons while at USC Aiken and he leaves the school having won 40 of his last 50 matches over the last two seasons.
Prior to taking over the USC Aiken program, Condon served as an assistant coach at Emporia State (Kan.) for four seasons. While at Emporia State, his teams finished among the top 12 in the nation in hitting percentage in three of the four years he was there.
Condon is a 1996 graduate of Clemson, earning his bachelor’s of science degree in management. He also competed on the Clemson men’s club volleyball squad. He received his master’s degree in business administration from Emporia State in 1999.
An active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association
(AVCA), Condon is married to Lesley Michelle and the couple have
one child, Ella.
After a standout career at Armstrong Atlantic State, Rindy Vidovich joins Will Condon's staff as an assistant coach for the 2009 season this fall.
The 2008 Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, Vidovich finished her AASU career with 1,024 kills, just the sixth player in Pirate history to record 1,000 kills. She also ranks sixth all-time in blocks (288) and seventh in digs (961).
Vidovich is a two-time PBC honoree, as well as a two-time PBC All-Tournament honoree. Last season, she earned All-NCAA Region Tournament honors in helping the Pirates to their first-ever NCAA Elite Eight appearance.
The native of San Pedro, Calif., graduated in May of 2009 with
her bachelor's degree in physical education. She is currently
pursuing her graduate degree from Armstrong Atlantic State.
Brittany Schmidt joins the Pirate volleyball coaching staff as
an assistant for the 2009 season.
Schmidt has spent the past four seasons as the assistant coach
at Wittenberg University, where she helped the Tigers to three
straight NCAA Division III Final Four appearances and a cumulative
142-17 record over those four years.
She was also recognized by the American Volleyball
Coaches’ Association (AVCA) as one of the top young
volleyball coaches in America with a Thirty Under 30 Award in
2009.
A former North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year for
Wittenberg, Schmidt played for the Tigers from 1999-2002 and earned
two-time All-Great Lakes Region honors.
Schmidt earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from
Wittenberg in 2003 and her master’s degree from the
University of Dayton. She and AASU head women’s basketball
coach Matt Schmidt were recently married this summer and the couple
live in Savannah.
