Sona Novakova Named PBC Women's Tennis Player of the Week


SAVANNAH, Ga. - Freshman Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis player Sona Novakova has been named the Peach Belt Conference's Player of the Week for the third time this season, announced today by league officials.

The top-ranked singles player in the nation, Novakova capped off a perfect dual match regular season with a 2-0 week in singles and doubles. The Slapanice, Czech Repuclib, native dropped just one game all week long in combined singles and doubles action. She defeated Lander’s Anni Pajunen, 6-0, 6-0, on Saturday and North Georgia’s Velina Boteva, 6-1, 6-0, on Sunday in singles play.

Novakova then teamed with Gabriella Kovacs to knock off Pajunen and Vahatalo of Lander, 8-0, on Saturday and Cash and Jordan of North Georgia, 8-0, on Sunday. She finishes the dual match regular season 17-0 in singles and 20-0 in doubles.

Novakova previously earned Player of the Week honors on March 10 and March 31. She and the top-seeded Lady Pirates will head into the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Championships this weekend, taking place from April 17-19 in Jonesboro, Ga.
