GCSU Uses Big Second Half To Knock Off Lady Pirates, 70-58


MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Georgia College & State University used a 21-7 second-half run to break open a close game and come away with a 70-58 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over visiting Armstrong Atlantic on Wednesday evening in Milledgeville.

The Bobcats (15-5, 10-3 PBC) picked up their eighth straight victory with the win, while AASU (13-9, 8-7 PBC) saw its modest two-game win streak come to an end.

GCSU led by five at halftime, 30-25, and stretched the lead out to double digits in the first seven minutes of the second half. AASU used a layup by Lacey Willis with 9:47 left to cut the lead to eight, 49-41, but the Bobcats embarked on a 21-7 run over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach, 70-48, with just over two minutes left.

Willis led all scorers for the Lady Pirates with 17 points, to go with nine rebounds. Lindsey Holmes hit four-of-seven three-pointers for 12 points.

Senior Kelly Versluis recorded three blocked shots, becoming the all-time leader in blocked shots in AASU history. The Netherlands native now has 85 career blocks in her two-year career, surpassing Zandrique Cason's previous school record of 83 blocks, set from 2000-03.

GCSU was led by Dominique Huffin's 12 points and Daniela Nopuente's 10 points off the bench. The Bobcats hit 52.4 percent from three-point range, nailing 11-of-21 shots from beyond the arc, wihle the Lady Pirates hit just 7-of-24 from long range for only 29.2 percent.

AASU returns to action on Saturday, February 14, with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Augusta State at Alumni Arena. AASU will take part in the WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative celebrating the association's continued publicity of breast cancer awareness. Lady Pirate and Lady Jaguar players will wear pink paraphenalia during the game.
