Pirates Compete at C.L. Varner Memorial On Friday

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Armstrong Atlantic State men's tennis team placed two singles players and one doubles team through the main draws after Friday's first day of action at the C.L. Varner Memorial, hosted by Rollins College.
Junior Mikk Irdoja is into the semifinals of the A Singles bracket after defeating Yan Rodrigues of Florida Tech, 6-2, 6-1, and Maksim Levanovich of Stetson, 6-3, 6-4, on Friday. Irdoja will face Rollins' Neil Clausen on Saturday in semifinal action.
Freshman Daniel Regan is into the semifinals of the B Singles bracket after picking up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rollins' Andy Johnson and a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sergio Valez of Barry.
Jose Carlos Tolentino won his opening match in the B Singles bracket, defeating Christian Battaglia of Florida Tech, 6-0, 6-2, but had to withdraw from his match with Stetson's Cesare Gallo because of an injury. Paul Fitzgerald dropped his A Singles bracket opening round match to Mark Mestan of Stetson, 6-4, 7-5, but came back to notch a consolation singles 6-3, 6-2 win over Girts Dzelde of Rollins.
In doubles action, the duo of Irdoja and Rafael Array defeated the Palm Beach Atlantic duo of Atanosov and Bolanos, 8-4, to advance to the second round. Regan and Tolentino fell in their first-round match, 8-6, to Clausen and Rowlands of Rollins.
Play continues on Saturday, beginning at 8:00 a.m., at the C.L. Varner Memorial.
