Pirates Compete At Georgia Tech Fall Invitational


ATLANTA, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State men's tennis team placed two players into the third round of the singles brackets at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational after Saturday's first day of action in Atlanta.

The Pirates' Mikk Irdoja notched two wins in the Singles A Draw, defeating Auburn's Nick Maurillo, 6-3, 6-4, and upsetting No. 3 seed Romain Bocaert of South Alabama, 6-3, 6-1, to move into the third round. Rafael Array, also competing in the Singles A Draw, lost to No. 5 seed Rhyne Williams - the No. 1 freshman recruit in men's tennis for 2009 - 6-2, 6-3 in his first-round match, but rebounded to defeat Jackson Moore of Georgia State, 6-3, 6-3.


In the Singles B Draw, Daniel Regan defeated Georgia's Alex Hill, 7-6 (4), 6-2, and Kosta Blank of UNC Wilmington, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1), to move into the second round. Jose Carlos Tolentino defeated Jon Pine of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 6-3, but fell to the top-seeded Illia Ziamtsov of UNC Wilmington, 6-3, 6-2, in his first-round match. Second-seeded Paul Fitzgerald lost to Henri Mangin of Georgia State, 6-3, 6-3.

Doubles action saw the team of Array and Irdoja pick up an 8-1 win over Georgia State's Mangin and Shiskov in first-round action of the Doubles A draw, while Regan and Tolentino notched an 8-3 win over Nikolov and Ybarra of UNC Wilmington in the first round of the Doubles B draw.

Play continues on Sunday with third-round singles followed by doubles, with the invitational concluding on Monday.
