Moultrie's Record Highlights New Year's Classic Day One


SAVANNAH, Ga. - Senior Brian Moultrie grabbed an Alumni Arena-record 19 rebounds - and a PBC-record 14 offensive rebounds - on Monday evening as the Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball squad defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 80-68, to wrap up day one of the 2008 Spring Hill Suites Midtown New Year's Classic. 

GCSU defeated Wingate, 85-78, in the first game of the day.

Moultrie also pumped in a career-high 23 points to go with his record-setting rebound output as the Pirates (7-1) won their third straight game. The Beaufort, S.C., native had a double-double in the first half alone with 12 points and 11 rebounds at the break. Moultrie finished the night by making 11-of-16 shots from the floor.

His 14 offensive rebounds breaks the old Peach Belt Conference record of 13, set by Juan Wiley of USC Aiken against Clayton State on January 28, 1998. His 19 rebounds breaks the Alumni Arena record of 17 rebounds, set by Bryan Taylor against GCSU on January 5, 2005.

Calvin Wilson added 17 points and eight rebounds for AASU, while Dwight Tolbert chipped in 10 points. West Virginia Wesleyan (1-7) was led by the duo of Neven Zeravica and Justin Caldwell, who each scored 14 points on the day.

In the day's first game, Wingate (5-6) jumped out to a quick 17-4 lead, but GCSU (5-1) erased that advantage with a 20-6 run of its own en route to an 85-78 victory. The PBC's top-scoring team hit 12 three-pointers in the contest and recorded 14 steals in handing the Bulldogs their third straight loss.

Justin Brown led the way for the Bobcats, hitting 8-of-11 shots from the floor, including 5-of-8 three-pointers, en route ot a game-high 21 points. Graham Martin chipped in 14 points as well for GCSU, while Reece Wiedeman added 11 points and Ty Rowland notched 10. Wingate was led by Ben Davis' 15 points and DeMario Mattox' near triple-double with 11 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Play concludes on Tuesday in the Spring Hill Suites Midtown New Year's Classic with GCSU taking on West Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. and the Pirates facing Wingate at 3:30 p.m.
