Chase, Roberts Earn PBC Baseball Weekly Honors

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Senior righthander Jeff Chase has been named the Peach Belt Conference's baseball Pitcher of the Week, while freshman catcher John Roberts has been named the league's Freshman of the Week, announced today by league officials.

Chase pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the series opener at Lander. The senior walked three and allowed one earned run while striking out seven to improve to 6-3 on the season. The Albuquerque, New Mexico, native set down the first nine Bearcats in order and set down the side in order five times, including the ninth inning. With that effort, he is now ranked 10th in the PBC in opponent batting average and strikeouts.

Roberts, meanwhile, blasted a two-run game-winning home run in the Pirates' rain-delayed 5-4 win at Lander on Sunday. He entered the game as a pinch hitter when rains halted the game on Saturday with Lander up, 4-3, then greeted reliever David Glover in Sunday's first at-bat with his sixth home run of the season with one on, giving the Pirates the win. On the week, the Guyton, Ga., native and South Effingham HS product hit .385 (5-for-13) with four RBIs.

The honor is the first for each player. Chase, Roberts and the Pirates will be next in action on Saturday, May 9, with a 4:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference tournament first-round contest against North Georgia in Aiken, S.C.
