AASU Athletics Facilities


 

The Armstrong Atlantic State University Division of Physical Education & Athletics moved into its current facility in July of 1995.

Armstrong Sports Center

An 82,000 square foot multi-purpose building, the AASU Sports Center provides expanded academic offerings in spacious, modern, surroundings. Students have a 2,000 square foot weight training/fitness center with 29 Cybex machine exercise stations, a free weight area; four classrooms, and two 3,535 square foot activity areas, 6 dressing rooms, an athletic training room outfitted with whirlpool baths and rehab equipment, and a two lane indoor track in which to attain their education. AASU's athletic teams will be able to play home events in a 4,000 seat arena that contains chair-back seating for spectators.

Alumni Arena

Alumni Arena, the 3,000 seat court venue inside of the Sports Center plays host to all Men's and Women's NCAA basketball games on the AASU campus, NCAA volleyball tournaments, and a multitude of special events. In the past, Alumni Arena has hosted a variety of events, some of which include the 1998 & 1999 Peach Belt Conference Basketball Tournaments, Georgia Special Olympics, Atlanta Hawks training camps, various prep basketball tournaments, ATA Taekwondo Championships, and area high school graduation ceremonies amont others.

Pirate Field (Baseball)

Pirate Field, the home of the perennially-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad, has seen three AASU squads advance to the NCAA Division II College World Series in 1988, 1989 and 1994. The 750 seat venue has received a series of facelifts which include the addition of new dugouts outfitted with a home dressing area and locker rooms, a press box, four batting tunnels, and a refurbished scoreboard. Fied dimensions measure 340 ft. down the lines, 380 ft. in the power alleys, and 390 ft. to center field.

 

Pirate Softball Field

The Pirate Softball Field hosted the nation's No. 1-ranked softball team in 2000 as the Pirates ascended to the top of the NFCA Division II Top 25 poll in April. The 200 seat venue features top-notch dugouts for both teams, grand stands behind home plate, and two softball-only batting tunnels beyond the right field fence. Field dimensions measure 195 ft. to right field and 200 ft. to all other parts of the park. The Softball/Soccer Fieldhouse, which opened its doors in January 2007, provides an on-site dressing facility with hand crafted wood lockers and an athletic training room for the team along with public restrooms and concession stand for spectators.

 

AASU Tennis Complex

The AASU Tennis Complex is used extensively by the AASU Health and Physical Education program, the Campus Recreation Program, and serves as home to the AASU men's and women's tennis teams, perennial participants in the NCAA Division II National Championships, and home of the 1995, 1996, and 2005 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Champions. The complex features 10 hard courts , a fieldhouse, and storage spaces. Covered spectator stands are lcated between the two top courts. Upgrades to the facility include 8 ft. windscreens instaled during the summer of 2003 and a new surface applied during March of 2006. Musco brand light fixtures are scheduled to be installed for each court during the fall of 2007. The venue has been chosen to host three of the last five ITA/Rolex Tennis Championships as well as the last three Men's NCAA DII Regional Tournaments and seven consecutive Women's NCAA DII Regional Tournaments.

Aquatics & Recreation Center

A verstile multi-purpose sport facility, the Aquatics and Recreation Center (ARC) is home to the AASU volleyball team, which earned its first-ever AVCA/Division II National Ranking in 2001 and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships. The space has a seating capacity of approximately 1,000 possesses a wireless sound system complete with Bose speakers, and can accommodate two regulation size volleyball courts and five badminton courts. The bleachers were refurbished in the spring of 2000 and the court is re-surfaced annually to ensure high quality flooring. An integral part of the Health and Physical Education and campus recreation programs, a cariety of courses and activites are conducted in the facility, some of which include badminon, aerobic dance, and yoga. Also located within the facility is a six lane, 25-yard indoor pool.

AT&T Field (AASU Soccer)

Arguably the finest outdoor sport surface in Savannah, AT&T Field servees as the home pitch for the AASU women's soccer squad. The 114 yds. x 72 yds. Tift 419 Bermuda grass pitche was constructed in early 2005 and saw the Lady Pirates post an 18-4-1 record in 2006, a second place finish in the Peach Belt Conference, and an appearance in the NCAA national tournament in only the second year of the program. The 300-seat venue is nestled beneath towering pine trees and features covered benches, a ground level press area, and a new and recently enlarged scoreboard. TheSoftball/Soccer Fieldhouse, which opened its doors in January 2007, provides an on-site dressing faciltiy with hand crafted wood lockers and an athletic training room for the team along with public restrooms and concession stand for spectators.

AASU Softball/Soccer Fieldhouse

Completed in 2006, the AASU Softball/Soccer Fieldhouse is a 3500-square foot complex that features carpeted locker rooms with hand crafted wood lockers, laundry facilities, and an athletic training area for the AASU women's soccer and softball programs. Also provided are restrooms and a concessions area for Pirate fans. The project represents a major commitment to the Pirates' two youngest sports - the AASU softball program began in 1998, while the AASU women's soccer program just completed its inaugural season in 2005.

Fitness Center

Located inside the Sports Center, the Fitness Center is a 2,000 square foot wight training/fitness center wioth 29 Cybex machine exercise stations, a free weight area, two dedicated cardovascular rooms with Precor and Stairmaster equipment.The Fitness Center plays a vital role in the "Strength and Conditioning" of all AASU Athletic programs.
